Visitors to Providence
Sunday morning visitors to Providence receive a warm smile and a welcome bag filled with information about our community of faith and a bag of tasty Virginia peanuts.
The Project Light Learning Center at Providence provides hope to those in our community who do not have functional reading skills or a high school diploma, or who cannot speak English fluently. Utilizing interactive software, this computerized outreach ministry offers free tutoring to help children and adults learn to read, improve reading skills or learn English as a Second Language. Volunteer tutors provide one-on-one assistance to each student.
Good Samaritan Fund
Our Good Samaritan Fund assists people in our congregation and community who need help paying utility bills or buying gasoline. An offering received on Christmas Eve and donations to a special fund support this ministry.
Providence Moves Into the Community
Once a year, Providence sets aside a special day for our congregation to move out into our community. We may help paint a home, repair a wheelchair ramp, clean a yard, or spend time refreshing a neighborhood church and grounds. We provide gift bags with a note of thanks for area fire stations, police stations, schools, and libraries. We take canned goods to the Food Bank. We start the day with prayer and breakfast at the church, mobilize, and then move out! We want our community to know that we are good neighbors, and that we have an open door to welcome them.
Partnering with Fairfield Elementary School
Providence has established a partnership with Fairfield Elementary School to provide volunteers for various programs and opportunities. This is part of the school district's "Partnership In Education" program. Church members may volunteer their time to support the school and assist the staff with their day-to-day responsibilities. Opportunities to help include: spending time with students through the Lunch Buddies and Reading Buddies programs, helping in the library and with computers, donating items for Beach Bags (weekend meals for needy students), helping with Fall and Spring extra curricular events, and offering our church for meetings and overflow parking for school events.
Holiday Food Baskets
Our Providence family prepares Thanksgiving and Christmas food baskets and delivers them to needy local families each year. Each basket or bag provides a turkey dinner complete with stuffing and all the fixings. Providence members and friends choose slips of paper listing various food items and donate the items to the church. A team of volunteers prepares the baskets for distribution.
