Christian Education

We have a variety of offerings on Sunday mornings at Providence.

Our Connections Class meets in the Connections Room (formerly church parlor) at 9:30 am for some time of fellowship. Beginning at 9:45 am they begin a focus of that week’s chosen lectionary scripture, using a combination of lecture and discussion of the week’s passage.

The Jubilate Class meets in the Choir Room at 9:45 am each week as well. This group attempts to mirror the scripture the pastor will use in the sermon, using study books, “Keeping Holy Time” with group reflection and sharing.
We use a curriculum for our children which has a Bible lesson each week based on the lectionary scripture for the week – “Spark House”.

For our youngest children, we offer our Little Lambs classrooms – Nursery is for age 0-2 and Preschool is for age 3 up to kindergarten. In our Nursery, an age-appropriate story is read each week and the children can play and interact in a safe space.

In the Preschool class, typically the children attend the Worship service through Time with Children and the go to their classroom and have a Bible story and age-appropriate activity from the Spark House Bible.
Our Elementary School children attend the Worship service through Time with Children as well and then they go to their classrooms for Enrichment. We have two classrooms for this age – kindergarten through 2nd grade and 3rd – 5th grade.
Our Middle School and High School youth participate in Youth Group on Sunday afternoons at 6:00 pm at the church with occasional activities outside of church.

We celebrate a Joy-Filled Sunday on December 10, presenting a day to celebrate Advent, a time of welcoming the Christ child into our hearts and homes! We will have a Service of Lessons and Carols at the 11 am worship service with special music performed by our Chancel Choir and Providence Kids. Following worship, we will have an Advent Workshop and Luncheon in the fellowship hall from 12:00 pm  - 1:30 pm with crafts and activities for children and adults. We will end the event with a music program featuring Bells of Providence, Merry Bells, Providence Kids, and a Christmas Carol Sing-along.

Beginning January 2024, we will offer a Confirmation Class to youth, grades 8 and above, who wish to explore what it means to profess faith in Christ and join our church.  Participating in the class commits you to nothing, as each child will have the choice upon completion whether to pursue membership or not.  The class is designed to be a time to learn about faith and explore church membership. The class will meet on Sundays, from 12:15 to 1:45 at the church with lunch served on January 7, 21, 28 and February 4. In addition, as a group, the weekend of February 23-25, we will attend the confirmation retreat at Camp Hanover in Mechanicsville, VA.  The cost of the retreat is $25/youth, with the church covering the rest.

These are some of the Christian Life opportunities available at Providence right now. We invite you to get involved. If you have questions, you may contact the church office at 757-620-6159 or the Christian Life elders Sue Crosland at suecrosland2940@outlook.com or Connie Salter at seasaltcpa@cox.net.

The below are some other traditional activities which we offer to enrich the lives of all, young and old as we seek to grow God’s kingdom.

During the Lenten season which extends from February 14 until Easter (March 31), we will celebrate the season with a day of fellowship after worship including lunch and a Lenten Workshop with Easter crafts and activities for children and adults.

On five Wednesday evenings in July and August 2 from 6:00 pm - 7:45 pm, we host our Wonder-Filled Wednesdays, an intergenerational program of Bible study, crafts, games, and fellowship. We serve a light dinner at 6:00 pm after which the fun commences. Our theme this past summer was "Proclamation Safari Park: Jesus is My Rescuer". The children and adults learned about endangered animals while also learning that Jesus is Our Rescuer.
