On Monday, August 9, the Session voted “that Providence Presbyterian Church will follow current CDC guidelines as they relate to church activities.” Current CDC guidelines are such that in public enclosed spaces (like our sanctuary) non-vaccinated people must wear a mask while vaccinated people are encouraged to wear a mask. Social distancing continues to be recommended.
The Session understands the desire of individuals to worship without wearing a mask while at the same time acknowledges that there are those among us who are not able to be vaccinated:
- Children under 12
- Individuals who cannot receive the vaccine for medical reasons
But, in order to eliminate confusion and create a welcoming community, until further notice, we will require all persons worshipping in the sanctuary to cover their nose and mouth with a mask. Masks will be provided as needed. With this in mind, as your Pastor, I will continue to wear a mask during worship except while in the pulpit. My decision to do this, even while vaccinated, is to model kindness and Christian charity toward all. I am guided by two scripture passages:
“For if then there is any encouragement in Christ, any consolation from love, any sharing in the Spirit, any compassion and sympathy, make my joy complete . . . Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 2:1ff); and “in everything, do to others as you would have them do to you (Matthew 7:12)”.
